Hormone Replacement Therapy: Protect Yourself from the Risks

Hormone replacement therapy (HRT) is associated with several risks, including increased rates of heart disease, breast cancer, stroke and blood clots. To protect yourself from these risks, it's important to maintain an open dialogue with your doctor.

Before beginning HRT, talk to your doctor about the following:
  • Age: Women under the age of 60 undergoing HRT generally do not experience an increased risk for heart disease. In fact, when taken early in menopause, HRT may help protect the heart.
  • Low Dose: To help treat your symptoms, your doctor should prescribe the lowest dose possible for the shortest amount of time. This will help reduce your risks.
  • Choose the Best Delivery Method: HRT is available in a number of forms, including gels, patches, pills, vaginal creams and suppositories. Talk to your doctor about which one is best for you and your symptoms.

It's also important to be open and honest about your symptoms with your doctor.
