libido: A term used to describe sexual desire; a lowered libido is often a symptom of menopause.

mammogram: A X-ray of the breast; recommended on a regular basis for women on HRT because of the increased chance of breast cancer.

menopause: The permanent end of a woman's monthly menstrual cycle, sometimes marked by symptoms such as hot flashes, lowered libido and sleep disruptions.

micronised: The process by which some hormones are administered orally, which involves a reduction in particle size and suspension in an oil or other liquid capsule.

non-hormone drug therapy: An alternative to HRT which is still being studied for its effectiveness and potential drawbacks.

osteopenia: A condition of lowered bone mineral density common among postmenopausal women which may lead to osteoporosis.

osteoporosis: A disease in which bone density decreases and the risk of fracture increases; is sometimes treated with changes in lifestyle or HRT.
